👋🏻 Hola & welcome to Nibble #24
New here? Don’t forget to 👇🏻
📆 Sept 12 - Wonderlust, Apple’s Yearly Launch Event
📆 Nov 6, San Francisco - OpenAI’s first-ever developer conference
What’s happening 📰
🗞️ X.ai might use X’s (ah not that ex) content to train their AI (Musk reportedly said only public data will be used). But now you know why the Twitter APIs got a price hike suddenly.
⚡️ Ngrok now allows static domains for all (you get one free static domain, if you are on a free plan).
What is ngrok? → TL;DR It’s a tool that tunnels your local servers to the public internet, for eg:ngrok http 4000
will expose the server running on 4000 to a publically accessible URL (btw, one of us got a security violation notice at work because of ngrok, so just know your stuff well before using it :P).😡 DHH clearly doesn't like calm waters. He got a bunch of people worked up last week by announcing in public that “Turbo is dropping Typescript” from their stack. Ideally, should have been a happy-go-merry thing. But some devs got angry about the PR to remove it. [TS Fiasco]
Also, In other news, Svelte is removing TS.
📣 Clubhouse making a comeback … as an audio app - Amidst Discord VCs, Twitter Spaces, and Naval’s new startup getting the heat of the voice activity, the OG is making a comeback as an audio-only app.
✨ AI Wrap Up
💰 AI Grant - An accelerator for AI startups. Batch 2 dropped sometime earlier. Batch 3 applications are open. So go apply if you are building with AI.
🍒 Adept.ai open-sourced Persimmon-8B - The most powerful fully permissively-licensed language model with < 10B parameters.
🦀 Paige & Microsoft to Build the World’s Largest AI Model to Fight Cancer (The idea is to not create more Walter White and fix the problem at its root)
🦚 Chirp v1, a Text-to-Music model by Suno AI - Chirp is a text-to-music model developed by Suno. They recently released the v1 and it’s pretty good! Try it through their discord. (Nibbler P finally gave voice to that rap he composed in college)
🧱 Remember Mojo? - The Modular team finally dropped the initial release of the Mojo programming language (be cautious of what you do with it)
💬 Anthropic launches a paid plan for its AI-powered chatbot - For $20/mo or £18/mo you can get “5x more usage” than the free tier, priority access, and access early access to new features.
⏰ Time released the TIME100 Most Influential People in AI and well, it received mixed emotions. (People in X-verse, criticized them for not including some OGs and adding people who just got famous without any tech foundations)
🏎️ Zoom has an official AI companion now - What? It’s the best time to be a boomer now! (hoping that AI can fix the damage that RTO1 has done to them)
🦅 HF releases Falcon 180B - Just days after the Llama 2 was released
✋ Amazon One to recognize your palm - claiming one palm achieves accuracy higher than scanning two irises 👀 (accuracy my arse! This is gotta be really unreliable, I know people whose palm lines change every year)
What brings us to awe 😳
🔥 Are Rome(s) destined to be watched burning? (ah! not bullshitting, hold a little).
If you are familiar with JS/TS ecosystem, you might already know Rome was a rust-based blazinglysuper ultrafast formatted, linters and builder for JS.
They raised $4.5 million from VCs in May 2021 and there they poured gasoline (money) over OSS. And they slowly lost control of the steering.
What now?
→ The core contributors team has announced Biome (also blazingly fast), an official fork of Rome, and said out loud that “Rome will no longer be maintained, and use Biome”. (sourced from bytes.dev)💵 DHH and Signal37 are planning to bring the pay-once-and-own-it kinda software back into markets.
Enough with SaaS, they plan to launch Once. (The idea and intentions are pretty neat and good, but I mean they can do philanthropy by selling SaaS)☄️ Website Carbon - SEO is cool and all but have you wondered if your website is helping fight the big G(global Warming)? Use this to know and maybe get some bragging rights.
Today I(we) Learnt 📑
🚫 You can now hide network requests going from Extensions in Network Tab [Source: Addy’s Tweet]
🫙 In MongoDB queries, you cannot use
$elemMatch
along with$pull
, you’ll have to give exact requirements if you want to remove it. [Docs]🎨 CSS "display" is a multi-keyword property now (as part of CSS DML3).
[📹 Video explaining it]
🤝 You have read ~50% of Nibble, the following section brings tools out from the wild.
What we have been trying 🔖
🎧 Bill Gates started a new podcast “Unconfuse Me with Bill Gates” - you might already know his love for reading and understanding difficult concepts. In these episodes, he tries to explain it to others with some good (I mean ofc!) guests.
📽️ Rocumentaries - Curated links to the very best documentaries
🧘🏻 Deepen: The AI Therapy App (don’t ask who is trying it out.)
Builders’ Nest 🛠️
💳 Caden - We don’t know how exactly, but with this app, you can share your data (any kind), get insights on it, and (for some reason) get paid for it.
🔔 nfty (pronounced notify) is a simple HTTP-based pub-sub notification service. It allows you to send notifications to your phone or desktop via scripts from any computer, and/or using a REST API
🧹 no(po)lyfill: prune your polyfills if you don’t need ‘em. (Why install something that was required as polyfill on Node 4, when you use Node 20?!?)
👨💻 open-interpreter - Let LLMs run code locally (like ChatGPT Code Interprettor but runs the code locally instead)
Meme of the week 😌
Off-topic reads/watches 🧗
✨ Earlier we posted a list of “Fast” maintained by Patrick Collison, the CEO of Stripe. Do you know why out of all he chose to maintain that list? → Why Fast?, a bunch of reasons to read in that post. (one more reason why man matters, IYKWIM)
🤑 Get Rich Slowly by Zerodha - Balance as there should be in the universe, we cannot talk about fast without talking about slow. One takeaway from this?
“Know what your edge is. Not everybody can be a good trader or stock picker, and that’s okay. Not everybody can be good at everything in life. Accepting that sooner will help you save a lot of money and grief.”
Wisdom Bits 👀
“A lot of people don’t realize how much work goes into making some thing look like it was no work at all.”
— Scott Hanselman
Weekly Standup 🫡
Nibbler P thought to go out for a nice cycling ride but did not anticipate the G20 restrictions around Delhi, duh! The weekend will be probably spent watching something from his IMDb tpot recc list and reading some Kafkaesque thoughts.
Nibbler A has just the perfect amount of time to not miss breathing this week. As a weekend ritual, played chess till 5 AM (yes, he is in the 5 am club). He aims to do some pending chores this weekend, some work & end it with a JJK episode & Ghibli movie ✨ (ideally).
Return to office
Type gymnastics? TYPE GYMNASTICS?
It's hard to respond to that without a part of my brain blue screening.
Typescript has one of the most beautiful implementations of a type system. Ffs it's turing complete AND has such an easy learning curve.
The ability to express complex scenarios succinctly using types is a feature and not a bug. It's an investment you make which has guaranteed returns. The weird squigglies you write that seem like an occult chant don't need to be weird.
I wish there were enough resources teaching people about how to extract value out of TS rather than simply being at parity with JS, because this situation just feels like a skill issue.
